NBA Players LEAVE THE NBA EN MASSE After the Gambling Scandal & Sign $2B Deal With The EuroLeague
The basketball world was rocked today as news broke that Chauncey Billups, Damon Jones, and Terry Rozier — former and current NBA figures — were taken into federal custody. What at first seemed like isolated arrests has since been revealed to be part of an enormous, years-long illegal gambling and sports-rigging operation that has torn the NBA wide open. With FBI raids across multiple states, millions of dollars in dirty gambling cash uncovered, and whispers of deep mafia connections, this scandal may only be scratching the surface. The question now is: who else is involved, and just how high up does this go?
The bombshell dropped on October 23, 2025. At exactly 6 a.m., FBI agents conducted simultaneous raids across the country — from Portland to Orlando to Las Vegas — in a meticulously coordinated operation. Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, a five-time All-Star, Finals MVP, and Hall of Famer who had coached a game just hours earlier, was arrested at his home. In Orlando, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, fresh off the bench from a game the previous night, was taken into custody at his hotel. Meanwhile, in the bright lights of Las Vegas, former Cleveland Cavaliers player and coach Damon Jones was detained by federal agents. These weren’t routine arrests — they were part of something far darker, far more expansive, and far more destructive than anyone in the basketball community could have imagined.
When FBI Director Kash Patel stepped to the podium later that morning, the magnitude of what was unfolding became clear. “Today,” he declared, “we announce a historic set of arrests in a wide-reaching criminal enterprise that involves both the NBA and La Cosa Nostra.” What Patel revealed stunned the world: a sprawling web of corruption connecting professional basketball insiders to members of America’s most notorious mafia families — the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese organizations. This wasn’t about minor betting offenses; this was about an industrial-scale criminal operation that defrauded victims of tens of millions of dollars.
In total, more than 30 individuals were arrested across 11 states in what the FBI has called one of the most complex criminal enterprises ever uncovered in professional sports. The Bureau’s investigation, years in the making, involved thousands of hours of recorded conversations, undercover operations, and a paper trail of wire transfers and cryptocurrency transactions that revealed a web of deceit woven deep into the fabric of the NBA.
Two major operations were exposed. The first, Operation Nothing But Bet, was a sophisticated insider gambling scheme that ran from late 2022 through early 2024. NBA players, coaches, and staff with access to confidential team information allegedly leaked details about injuries, player availability, and lineup changes to gamblers hours before games. One case involved Terry Rozier, who on March 23, 2023, texted a friend before a game saying he would leave early due to a “hamstring injury.” That friend then relayed the information to a betting ring, which placed over $200,000 in “under” prop bets on Rozier’s stats. Sure enough, Rozier exited the game after just over nine minutes, and the bets paid out handsomely.
Damon Jones was accused of selling similar inside information — including details about LeBron James’ health status — for as little as $2,500 a tip. In one instance, before a February 2023 Lakers-Bucks game, Jones sent a text saying “Bet Bucks, player out,” referring to LeBron sitting out that night. The Lakers lost by 29 points, and those with the tip made a fortune. Prosecutors estimate that Operation Nothing But Bet alone generated tens of millions of dollars in fraudulent winnings, often through major legal betting platforms like DraftKings and BetMGM, which were completely unaware of the insider manipulation taking place.
